airberlin group

airberlin is a national and international airline and has been a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) since 1997. At the start of 2011, airberlin also became the 37th member of the Association of European Airlines (AEA).

With 31,5 million passengers, airberlin is the second largest airline in Germany. In terms of passenger numbers the airberlin group is in seventh place amongst European carriers. airberlin is one of the leading airlines in Europe. The company has established its position on the market by constantly increasing its flight offer, through the technical innovations it has made and the new products it has introduced. Alongside airberlin, the airberlin group is made up of the Austrian airline NIKI (with 49.9%), the Swiss airline Belair (49%) and airberlin technik GmbH (100%).

In early 2004, airberlin took over 24% of NIKI Luftfahrt GmbH. In February 2010, airberlin increased its share in NIKI to 49.9%. The airline, which was founded by the Austrian Formula 1 world champion, Niki Lauda, increases the airberlin group’s market presence in Austria and also strengthens airberlin’s hub in Vienna as the gateway to Eastern Europe. In November 2007, airberlin acquired a 49% share in Belair Airlines. The Swiss airline is based in Zurich and operates flights to destinations in the Mediterranean, Egypt, the Canary Islands and Germany on behalf of the airberlin group. airberlin technik GmbH (ABT) is the aviation technology division within the airberlin group and the main provider of maintenance services for the group’s aircraft. The company was formed on 1st April 2011 by merging airberlin Luftfahrtechnik Berlin, Düsseldorf and Köln and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Air Berlin PLC & Co. Luftverkehrs KG.

Air Berlin PLC is the legal parent company of the airberlin group and was founded in England and Wales as a public limited company in 2005. The management is based in the German capital, Berlin.
