airberlin is a national and international airline and has been a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) since 1997.
With more than 30.2 million passengers, the airberlin group is the second largest airline in Germany and one of the leading airlines in Europe. The company has strengthened its position on the market by continuously increasing its flight offer, through the technological innovations it has made and the new products it has introduced. Alongside the German airline Air Berlin PLC & Co. Luftverkehrs KG (airberlin), the airberlin group is made up of the Austrian airline NIKI Luftfahrt GmbH (NIKI), the Swiss airline Belair Airlines AG (Belair Airlines) and airberlin technik GmbH.
In early 2004, airberlin took over 24 percent of NIKI. In February 2010, airberlin increased its share in NIKI to 49 percent. The airline, which was founded by the Austrian Formula 1 world champion, Niki Lauda, not only strengthens the airberlin group's market presence in Austria, but also the airberlin hub in Vienna as the gateway to Eastern Europe. In November 2007, airberlin acquired a 49-percent share in Belair Airlines. The Swiss airline is based in Zurich and operates flights to destinations in the Mediterranean, Egypt, the Canary Islands and Germany on behalf of the airberlin group. airberlin technik GmbH (ABT) is the aviation technology division within the airberlin group and the main provider of MRO services for the group’s aircraft. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of airberlin.
Air Berlin PLC & Co. Luftverkehrs KG is the legal parent company of the airberlin group and was founded in England and Wales as a public limited company in 2005. The management is based in the German capital, Berlin.
